Despite the condition of the room and the rock hard bed, we slept through the night and were ready for anything this morning....until we hit the free breakfast in the hotel. There was nothing wrong with the food, it was just that it was typically Chinese and I didn't know exactly what I was eating (or to be more precise, what I didn't eat).
Nevertheless, we put enough nutrients in our bodies to give us sufficient energy to visit the Summer Palace of the Emperor. The grounds cover over five million square metres and is impressive from the front to the back.
I would describe the settings as very calming and restful, which is quite opposite from the hectic scene at the entrance. Chinese people do not line up orderly as we are expected to do in Canada, but instead push and shove their way to the front of the line.
We spent three hours touring the area and then started the walk back to our hotel. We had almost given up any hope of finding a restaurant we would be comfortable in when we spotted one that looked okay.
It turned out to be more than okay....the food was great and super cheap! We ordered five dishes, along with four beer and our share of the cost was $7.92 Cdn.
