On the same day that we visited the Tiananmen Square we went to the Forbidden City, which is a massive structure. It previously housed the Emperor of the time and today is a tourist attraction.
It is very impressive, but so large that you become immune to the beauty. The books state that the walled structure consists of 9000 rooms in 800 building. In the 36 degree heat it felt like we were visiting them all.
The favourite saying of the day belongs to Alice...."I think this is the last square and the exit gate will be over there". I believe she said that at least three times!
We started at around 9:00 and we left the Forbidden City complex at 2:00, looking for a beer! It only took us another hour of walking to find the perfect spot.
We walked to the lake and found a roof top terrace that in Canada would be in the final stages of being condemned....but the beer did taste awesome! Climbing the rails to get to the top of the terrace were the most worrisome part.....that and the view from the stairs.
We got home exhausted and stiff and sore, but happy with the day.
