Flying Inland July 8, 2013

Yesterday we flew from Beijing to Xian, mainly to see the Terracotta Warriors.  The flight was a little delayed, but we found the airport to be quite organized and orderly.

Xian is a mixture of old and new.  Our hotel is located within the city walls and is in a perfect location for visiting the local history.

Before we left Canada I had envisioned China as the China of old.....the China we saw in books and on TV.  I hadn't anticipated just how modern this country has become.  Cities consist of huge high rises with all the modern conveniences a person could want.  The sheer number of people is most amazing.

That being said, the "Old China" is still very much in existence.  The Great Wall, the Ming Tombs and the temples and summer palaces attest to that.

We hit upon another reminder of the "old" today when we walked to the Muslim quarter in Xian.  It is a five minute walk from our hotel and is in stark contrast to the luxurious rooms we have here.

There were people everywhere selling food and trinkets....busy, busy, busy!   A most amazing selection of snack foods, most of which we have never seen before.  We sampled a few like fried bananas coated in coconut.

This is a place we will be back to many times in our three days in Xian.  Right now it is off to see the Warriors!
