Taking a Break

We are in Hermosillo enjoying the comforts of a 4 star hotel and are enjoying every minute of it.  I miss having a bath and we assumed that a nice hotel like this would have a tub...no such luck!

Fred drove me into the city to catch my 8:30 am flight to Cancun and rather than leave extremely early we decided to do it this way.

I am flying to Cancun to meet with an old friend in Puerto Morelos at an all-inclusive resort - the first time I will have ever stayed at an all-inclusive.

Will keep you posted!

Tacos and Karaoke

Oh, what a night!  Did we sing that one too?

The fun started at 4:00 and didn't end until many hours later.  A Mexican family used the outdoor BBQ area at the pool to make and sell fish and shrimp tacos, along with chili rellenos.  Some of the best tacos I have tasted in a long time.  My personal favourite was the chile stuffed with cream cheese and shrimp, wrapped in bacon and then deep fried.....a healthy Friday night meal!

Not many of us wanted to call it a night, but we finally had to go home when the karaoke system was taken down and the couple who donated their time and system went home.

My throat is sore and I am tired....indications of a fun night.

Busy Sunday

We got up at 5:30 am on Sunday to help set up for the San Carlos cancer walk.  The walk started at La Palapa on the beach and the sunrise was beautiful.  Nice, but not nice enough to get me up that early everyday...or even once a week....or even once a month.  Come to think of it, once a year is plenty.

We, along with six friends from our park, volunteered to set up and operate the water stands along the route.

Approximately four hundred men and women took part in the stroll.

We had a few minor problems like setting up on the wrong side of the road, but the police were very helpful with the move.

The walk started at 9:00 and by 11:30 we were sitting with other friends back at La Palapa.  We understand that there is nothing better than greasy french fries with margaritas.  Doesn't appeal to me!

It was an extremely rewarding day, one which we hope to repeat next year.

White Hat Society

We were walking through the streets of Alamos and I noticed something that was so different from San Carlos that I had to comment.

White cowboy hats everywhere and cowboys boots...definitely cattle country!

Humming Birds

From our 5th wheel window we can see the Humming Birds visiting the cactus blooms. Not the best of pictures, but you can get the idea from these two.

Colonial Towns

We have wanted to return to Alamos, Mexico for many years, but just like others things that trip was put on the back burner.  It is 50 kms out of the way and when you are heading to warmer weather that 50 kms seem like an eternity.

Alamos is situated in the hills and as a result it cools down at night - a lot cool!  Five days ago we were doing every thing we could to cool the unit down and this morning we had the mini heater on!

We plan on spending two days here, arriving at the perfect time.  There is an International Music Festival on and the town is hopping.  Not many campers, but lots of Mexicans staying at the hotels.

Alamos was started in the 1600s, around the time of a huge silver find in this area.  It grew with many huge colonial houses being built.  After the silver disappeared, families left and the town went into ruins.  It was rediscovered about 50 years ago by wealthy Americans who restored many of the old homes into hotels and restaurants.  Today it is a National Historic Site and is a wonderful display of colonial times in Mexico.  It reminds me of the city of Merida.

Never one to pass up a challenge, we climbed the 356 steps to the look-out point over looking the city.  Not as bad as we thought it would be and the view was great.

Not satisfied with that walk, we went for another long hike checking out other RV Parks and ended up back in the midst of the festivals at the end of the day.

Our day ended on a high note when, after 63 days on the road, we finally spruced ourselves up and went out for a nice dinner - no more taco stands and quesadillas on the beach.  Real food and real wine!
