Family

Chanseng wanted us to make a small detour on the drive back to Phnom Penh and meet his family. We gladly accepted the invitation.

When invited to a Cambodian's house it is customary to take a small gift so that became task number one. We eventually settled on a scarf for his mother and a soccer ball for his nieces and nephews.

His father died when Chanseng was seven leaving his mother to raise seven children on a small rice farm. She also owns a small shop selling a little bit of everything.

The shop was indeed small and outdoors as is common in Cambodia. Their house was located a few metres away and was built in a typical Cambodian style with the sleeping quarters built on stilts above the living quarters.

We met two sisters, a brother- in-law and numerous children and of course, his mom. All were very gracious hosts.

It was a special time for us and I think for them, as well. Chanseng thanked us numerous times for meeting his family.

His mother obviously instilled the importance of education as many of her children went to university, one speaks Japanese and works in Japan, one speaks Chinese, one is mechanical engineer and our guide has a chemistry degree - speaks English very well and is now learning French. He has big plans and I have no doubt he will achieve his goals. ( very disciplined young guy) .
