Another Version

Yesterday we talked to a Mexican who has been here for twelve years and he gave us his version of what is happening in Akumal.

Because it is the only free access to the beach for miles, the tour companies are bringing in huge bus loads of people for snorkelling. These people are destroying the reef and the turtle area so CEA wants to limit the number coming in. They are proposing a 300 peso entrance fee (locals get in free) and a different entrance to control the movement of people. The huge fences are already up and in use.

Supposedly it is the tour operators who have started this blockade and riled up the locals to assist.

The police are now involved and I assume that is why we were able to walk out to catch the collectivo to Puerto Aventuras yesterday. Still no car movement!

We don't know which version is correct, but I hope it is the last one as I would not want to see Akumal privatized. You choose!

I agree. Fingers crossed that they will not go the privatization route. That would be very sad to see.

I'm thinking this dispute has more to do with numbers and the tour guides.
