Abandoned Homes

We have been trying to ward off boredom by walking everywhere and today we were gone for hours.  We walked to a different area of town and saw some evidence of the former riches of Merida.

We know that Merida has some enormous mansions that were built when sisal was a huge industry in this area.  Many of these homes were built on Paseo de Montejo and have now been renovated by large corporations like Banamex and other banking institutions.

When the sisal industry fell on hard times, many of the families on Montejo moved out of their homes and on to other parts of the city or country.  Many smaller mansions were built just off Paseo de Montejo and we found out today that some have been abandoned completely. They look fabulous and I wish I had unlimited resources to renovate one that we saw today.

The above picture shows a renovated mansion.  This, we believe, is a private residence.  This city has such a rich history that many other parts of Mexico pale in comparison.
