Another Day on the Streets

Again we got up early to beat the heat and again it didn't work! The temperature only went to 36C today but with the humidity it felt like 46C.

We walked to see the Hoa Lo Prison to see where the French kept their political prisoners but also to see where the American pilots were held after being captured during the Vietnam War or the American War, as the Vietnamese call it.

It was interesting to see Senator John McCain's flight suit and the pictures involving the rest of the American prisoners. The write ups were definitely one sided! I think Mc Cain spent five years in this prison.

We then walked to the other side of Hoan Kiem Lake to check out a hotel for our return from Sapa. The walk wan't that long but we had to make three stops along the way just to cool down. We found stores that had a working AC and pretended to be interested in cameras, TVs and computers.

We had a tour through a newer hotel and loved the place. Fred, being the bargainer that he is, negotiated a lower prices for their best room in the house!

At 12:30 we had to call it quits for awhile as we needed a break. We rested and washed a load of clothes in the jacuzzi tub - loaded it, poured in some laundry soap and turned it on! Works like a charm, as long as you keep your hand over the in-take valve!

We must be getting over our jet lag for we still had the energy to go to the local market to check out some runners. We didn't want to carry extra shoes in our backpack, but we are planning on taking a couple of longer hikes in Sapa so feel we need the support of runners. You can get all kinds of knock-offs here including Nikes. No purchase made, but we now know where to go.

Tomorrow we plan on walking to the complex of Ho Chi Minh and to see the pagodas around there. We will try to keep up with the blog but they have been cutting me off and not letting me save or post anything online.
