Last Day

Yesterday  in Venice was not anything like it was supposed to be. We had planned to sleep in a wee bit and that we did, but after that we went off track.

A gondola ride was on my bucket list, but the Irish in me came out and I just couldn't pull the plug on that much money....so we walked many canals and watched from the sidelines. Yes, I know we will regret it!

Fred, on the other hand, has no trouble spending Euros on anything Italian made, especially leather and runners. I must admit, the runners are pretty nice!

We spent a great deal of time away from the Grand Canal visiting the other parts of Venice. Not as touristy yet still a fun place to see.

Today we move on to Parma for four nights. We take the 10:25 am speed train to Bologna and then a regional train to Parma, arriving around 1:30.

We had lunch at a restaurant on one of the working canals...no gondolas, only taxis and cargo haulers. Quite a different atmosphere and so busy.

The only way to eat tortellini! As you can from the picture, I am thoroughly enjoying the olive from my drink, the drink not so much. I will give it one more try as everyone around here seems to be drinking them and they look so good. Billee says they have a sparkling wine in them, but I'm pretty sure I must have ordered the wrong thing because this one tasted like a watered down martini. I didn't order by name...I just pointed to another table and said I will have what she is drinking.

ok Irish Woman...how much was the gondola? I would have lent you the money ;-)
And that tortellini looks really good...I think I could have that every day!

Too much for me!! The interest on the loan might have been more than I could bear.

My favourite food right now is a spaghetti dish with garlic, olive oil and peperoncino (hot, spicy peppers). The heat depends on the chef...I have had some that burned all the way down and some that just had a hint of spice. Bringing some home. Will give you some to try.

Ok that along with Kampot pepper will keep us warm all winter. What an amazing city -- I agree -- hard to compare it to anywhere else.
