A Little Touring

Today we hired a car and driver to take us to Uxmal to see the ruins and it was everything we remembered from our previous visits.

This is a pretty special place and I would visit every year if possible. The vendors are kept outside the gates allowing people to roam the ruins at their leisure and not be pestered constantly.

The weather was perfect for walking and climbing.

A Few More Pictures

I have a few pictures of our drive from San Pancho on the west coast to Merida. The scenery changes as do the people. We left San Pancho and drove through jungle and hills to get to the flat plains around Mexico City. We drove [accidentally, of course] through some mountains by Orizaba and finally we reached the flatland of the Yucatan.

At nearly every tope and red light there are vendors selling food stuff of some sort...it may be a truck load of tomatoes or it may be pineapple juice on the side of the road.

The methods of transportation vary from walking with your herd in the mountains to a tuk tuk in the cities.

And as usual in the State of Yucatan the military presence is very noticeable. For the first time in many years we were asked to produce our tourist passes and identification.

We're Back

We arrived in Merida on the 24th of January and have done very little since arriving. We have have been wandering around close to our hotel and as usual have seen some interesting sights.

More to come with the next post!

Strange Road Behaviour

Yesterday on our little unplanned back road excursion we came across something we had never seen before. We were high in the hills and on some pretty scary hairpins curves when we met a car face on in our lane.

No one seemed bothered by this so we just followed the flow. It seems that at many sharp corners the trucks and buses cannot make the turn so the traffic just trade lanes. If we hadn't been following a car, I'm not sure how we would have handled the situation.

The picture doesn't show it the best, but hopefully it shows enough to understand what I mean.

Tough Day

Our day started out pretty good, the roads were great and the weather perfect. Everything was going just the way we wanted until 12:30. We were 37 kms from our destination when we were stopped east of Puebla.

The truckers reported to us that there was a major accident about 15 miles ahead. We were surprised at the use of miles instead of kilometres but took them at their word.

Two hours later we were still in the midst of the huge jam. We could see nothing but trucks ahead and back. We knew there was a good possibility that we would be spending most of the day [and maybe the night] right where we were.

After another hour or so we went for a walk and could see a turn off not far ahead. With the help of a couple of truckers we were able to manoeuvre between semis and hit the turn off. One trucker told us which way to go and how to get there.

It meant a lot of backtracking and we ran into some pretty poor roads but at least we were out of the jam. Fred estimated that the back log was at least 60 miles long.

We finally made it to Orizaba at 6:00 pm instead of our estimated 1:30 arrival. Long and tiring day!

At 8:30 Fred checked Live Google Earth and the jam was still there and miles long. Thank goodness for the truckers and their advice on what to do. They couldn't do what we did because the road we took was narrow, high up and had lots of hairpins [no guardrails, of course] along with tope after tope!

Raccoons

The last few times we were golfing in San Pancho the greens were messed up and in pretty rough shape. The manager told us that the raccoons have been digging the grass up every night and the workers just can't keep up.

It didn't keep us from enjoying the course but it did make putting very difficult.

Travel Time

On January 10th both Fred and I flew to Saskatoon to help celebrate his mom's 93rd birthday. We were a little shocked at the cold temperatures [-30C when we arrived], but were pleasantly surprised that the wind was missing...it cold have been much worse.

This morning we left San Pancho to start a six day drive across Mexico. The reason I mention this is because when we left Saskatoon the temperatures rose to about + 4C and tonight in Morelia the temperature is +2C.  What are we thinking???

Fred's Girlfriend

A few days before we left San Pancho we stopped for a bite to eat at a main street restaurant and a young lady took a liking to Fred. She was in her house, behind a locked door keeping her from the traffic on the street.

She kept waving and giving him "the look"! I must admit she was as a sweetie and I'm not jealous!!!

Special Birthday

A week or so ago we saw the dancing horses going by our apartment so in true form we followed them.

They were part of a celebration in the local church...we think it was the 15th birthday of one of the rider's daughters. Fifteenth birthdays are very special in Mexico and families spend their hard earned money in celebrating. This family obviously wouldn't have any trouble paying for the occasion.

The fifteen year old daughter is blessed in the church and then the parties start. They go from early in the afternoon and continue late into the evening with entertainment throughout.

With A Group

A group of our friends from La Parota, along with Fred and I, golfed San Pancho yesterday. It was a fun day, some great shots, some poorer shots and some cart aerobics.

There were eight of us so we split into two groups to keep the waiting time down to a minimum.

I have been golfing pretty good lately with a few birdies, but when it is just Fred and I we don't even think of the birdie juice. Mike had some juice along, just in case, and so when we met after the round we had to celebrate my birdie with a shot of sherry. I think I like Billee's birdie juice better...she uses Butter Ripple Schnapps, a much easier drink to get down!

A fun day with a great Italian meal afterward.

My Favourite People

My two favourite people on the beach...one just sits and enjoys the activity and the other sells me all the sour gummies I want! And, no, that isn't me in the bathing suit!!
